Plop of The Week: Sklarbro Country #98

A few current prolific comedians joined forces this past week for some fun podcastery (made-up work alert!). The way-out-there but always working, Reggie Watts, brought his brand of comedic magic to the calming shores of Sklarbro Country. The hard working duo in their own right, Randy and Jason Sklar, create an excellent messing around space for guests and having Watts in the fold was a fun experiment. Here are a few more thoughts about Sklarbro Country #98 for Splitsider's "This Week In Comedy Podcasts" post:

Worlds collide with the latest Sklarbro Country episode when musical comedy genius, Reggie Watts, visits the hardest working comedy duo. Before Watts checks in, The Sklar Brothers show off their bounty of “week-of” sports jokes. Showing off their topical range, they manage to sneak in a great Sklarbrotration segment dissing Lil’ Wayne, complete with a Hatfield and McCoy reference. Once Watts steps in, the show really gets going with a steady stream of riffing. Watts is a natural partner-in-crime for the brothers. They kick-start it with several minutes of overanalyzing Watts’ infamous golf sweater. The Sklars make the sports connection with Watts through a fun sports anthem discussion. They explore the process of The White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army becoming a sports anthem. Then Watts gives it a try himself, creating a brand new haphazard Dodgers’ anthem. Other gems include a highly inappropriate but hilarious brainstorming session about Native American restaurants and Y2K Museums. Plus, there’s another quality appearance by Tiger Woods (the always on point Chris Cox). There’s a lot packed into the episode, the only way the brothers know how to operate. The Sklars continue to show why they’re the masters of fun with the ability to bring anyone into the sports fold and their awesome house of riffing.

Here are the rest of the Splitsider crews' picks for the week. I'm happy another seemingly oddball pairing of Bills Simmons and Lena Dunham made the list (nice one, Samantha!):

WTF with Marc Maron #287 – Bob Odenkirk, David Cross, John Ennis, Josie Long, Neal Brennan

Plop of The Week: Pop My Culture #72

It seems I'm always pushing for the silly/serious combo with these Splitsider episode picks. Duality of man and all that BS? Or just a sympton of my emotional ADD? This week, I leaned heavy on the silly and and was grateful to catch the Judy Greer episode of Pop My Culture. Greer fit right in with Cole Stratton and Vanessa Ragland, almost like she could be their third host. It's easy to be a fan of PMC and Judy Greer. Having them all wrapped up in one fun podcast present? Bonus. My write-up for Jesse Fox Splitsider "Week In Comedy" podcast round-up:

Judy Greer is an entertainment gem, always a treat no matter the movie, show or interview. Her recent visit with Pop My Culture’s Cole Stratton and Vanessa Ragland is another head first jump into the silly pool. It’s such an easy fit, Greer feels like she could be the unofficial third host. The three roll through a ton of topics and even manage to mix in some a little honest-to-god thoughtful Greer career revelations. Some of the choice topics include the glory of a Zombie Whitney Houston video, tornado turtles, CMT reality shows, academic Taco Bell talk and whole lot more. It’s a treat to see both the contemplative and go-with-it shades of Greer. There’s quality revelations on Greer’s latest film, Jeff Who Lives At Home, including some serious Susan-Surandon-is-awesome talk. A particularly crazy segment is when the trio list numerous types of “Judy” – a truly oddball brainstorming session. Plus, Greer explains the mechanics of Madonna parties. Stratton’s a smart and thoughtful host, keeping things moving and sneaking in a few oddball revelations to match Ragland’s charming kookiness. Ragland punctuates like no other in podcasting. Both Stratton and Ragland embrace the joy of tangents. Having Greer in tow just adds to the fun.

The rest of the Splitsider podcast group went a little off the beaten path this week with its main picks and honorable mentions. Always fun to spread the shout-out wealth. (Pretty sure there's no actual monitary value assigned to podcasts or podcast-related shout-outs.) The complete list of picks from the Splitsider crew:

The Duncan Trussell Family Hour #8 - Pete Holmes
The Smartest Man in the World "Lobsters"

Plop of The Week: Walking The Room with Patton Oswalt

Just a few dudes talking in a closet? Ahh, the timeless format. Walking The Room strikes again with a Patton Oswalt guested episode winning the day...well, week. Episode #81 of the Behrendt/Anthony show is my pick for the Splitsider "This Week In Comedy Podcasts":

Intimate and insane, as always, Walking The Room offers up another energetic episode with Patton Oswalt. The closet chat session quickly turns into a crazy mess. A fun crazy mess. Behrendt, Anthony and Oswalt create the best kind of hangout session, free form and full of passion – no matter the topic. Behrendt classic recap of his Camp Freddy experience sends Oswalt to a giddy state. Oswalt chimes in throughout with his usually awesome storytelling, connecting the dots between the Anthony and Behrendt ranting to his own absurd happenings. Oswalt relays an epic glee club fail moment and his story about running into crazy fallen-apple hoarders. The guys offer up a hobotang PSA, of sorts. And the episode concludes with some bonding over complaining about shitty neighbors. The universal sitting around and bitching topic. Don’t worry – they still manage to sneak in some more “horse shit.”

Here's the complete list of the Splitsider episode picks, an eclectic mix of popular shows that don't always get the top recognition. And then there's the ol' standby, WTF:

Pop My Culture #61 - Phil LaMarr
Guys with Feelings - Rob Delaney
WTF with Marc Maron #235 - Donald Glover
Walking The Room #81 - Patton Oswalt
Judge John Hodgman "The Bedding Crasher"

Honorable mentions include Comedy Bang! Bang! #135 (Paul F. Tompkins, Erinn Hayes, Dan Telfer), Doug Loves Movies (Sarah Silverman, Brian Posehn, Edgar Wright), Improv4humans #5 (Sean Conroy, Jill Donnelly, Colton Dunn) and Superego “The Season of Giving."

The AV Club: Podmass December 1-7

The A.V. Club elders did their thing again. You know that thing? The one where they consume a shitload of media and entertainment and then act all knowledgeable about it, maybe even with a little better-than-the-rest-of-us vibe? Yeah, that thing. Honestly, I'm always in awe of the output of their staff. Even if it's all a lie, they do a damn good job of lying to us.

They also took the time to check-out two new shows (new to them): You Made It Weird and The Dork Forest. Both are quality shows with distinct outputs compared to their peer shows, thanks in large part to their great hosts (Pete Holmes and Jackie Kashian, respectively).

Their Podmass picks for favorite podcast episodes are again comedy dominated with many of the usual suspects. A few more selections than the last week out:

The Best Show On WFMU
The Bugle #174 "Britain’s Back Baby!"
How Was Your Week? #39 “Horror-curious” - Nick Kroll, Gabe Liedman
Judge John Hodgman #43 "Triple Word Scorn"

Plop of The Week: Walking The Room "Live Cuddle"

The Plop List lives! And, yes, I'm still listening to shows. Don't let the slow news week fool you. After a holiday reprise from picking favorite episodes for Splitsider, Jesse Fox got the gang back together for the weekly roundup post. I plucked down a few bucks for the first live Walking The Room episode. Probably the best few bucks I've spent in awhile. And it's nice to contribute to the mighty comedy podcast economic engine. Can you hear the rumble in the distance? (Let's just say we both hear it, okay?) My deep thoughts, meaning my recap on this quality episode:

The wayward comedy buddies, Greg Behrendt and Dave Anthony, offer up a live episode for fans. Proving the charm and, yes, even the bickering translates into the live arena. The guys jump right into a fun arguing session from the get-go and then we’re off to an hour-plus of inappropriateness. Behrendt joyfully ties together airplane and flatulence anecdotes. Anthony and Behrendt fall into a fun who’s-on-first worthy riff, explaining Tapout to each other. A live show means we get guests. The guys have a ton of fun with both Jen Kirkman and Brendon Walsh, showing how Walking The Room could easily feature guests on the regular. Kirkman quickly gets sucked into dirty talk with the clowns but, as she’s want to do, quickly regains control. Honest through-and-through, she steers the conversation towards memory lane and life on the road with Behrendt. Walsh relays a story truly made for this show – one of he and friends working as drunken clowns for fancy parties back in Austin. Walsh’s obnoxiousness and go-for-the-wrong joke instincts make him a natural partner for Behrendt and Anthony. As a bonus: Marc Maron makes an off-mic appearance, sitting in the audience. Don’t worry – there’s still some family filler, including a one-upmanship of who can mess with their kids the most. All-in-all, it’s just what you’d want from a Walking The Room live hangout.

The rest of the Splitsider picks this week:

The Best Show on WFMU
This Is That #22
RISK! - Gil Ozeri
Walking The Room "Live Cuddle November 18th" - Jen Kirkman, Brendon Walsh

Honorable mentions going around: How Was Your Week with Julie Klausner #38 (Mike Daisy, Gil Ozeri), Skeletor's Mouthpiece #12 "Headlines: Part 2 Erection Productivity" and  The Long Shot #408 (Jackie Kashian).
