Plop of The Week: The Bugle #193

The Splitsider comedy podcast crew offered up an ecclectic mix of shows this week in the "This Week In Comedy Podcasts" column. It's always great to highlight the mix of perspectives and comedic approaches in the comedy podcast realm. My pick celebrated the full-force anger and satire approach of The Bugle. Sure, there's not a shortage of angry comedians ranting on comedy podcasts (or stages for that matter). Few comedians have the knack or the willigness to bottle up their natural anger and share it as biting political and cultural satire. The Bugle hosts, comedians John Oliver and Andy Zaltman are masters of satire. Catching any given week/episode is another opportunity to indulge in good ol' fashion burn 'em all satirical skewering. Here's my write-up for the Splitsider post:

It’s a Presidential election year, which means paying attention is like taking a daily punch in the face. Lucky for me, I have The Bugle, the best stupidity antidote – especially for these politically inane times. John Oliver and Andy Zaltman continue to push ahead with the quality riffing, even while recording the show from different continents. This week out, Oliver provides a bit of behind the scenes Daily Show insight with some fun George Clinton (The Funk) anecdotes. The guys quickly dive head first into the best Bin Laden Assassination Anniversary comedy workshop, lambasting the greeting card industry, Bin Laden’s excesses and anyone making political hay from the Bin Laden assassination. The Bugle is the best kind of angry humor – nothing is sacred. The freedom Oliver and Zaltman exercise allows the funny to walk the yard, freely picking fights with whoever’s unlucky enough to make eye contact. Oliver and Zaltman get a lot out of the released Bin Laden documents. Zaltman even sneaks in a bit of sketch humor with an overly honest Bin Laden final recording. Pretty sure the intellectually devoid election year politics are going to keep handing out daily face punches. Thankfully, we have The Bugle to help fight back.

Plop of The Week: The Bugle #185

Wow. Talk about neglecting my internet duties for a bit. Here's my pick and excerpt for the Splitsider comedy podcast round-up from the week of March 5th. Another solid Bugle episode. In all honesty, I could save myself time most weeks and just pikc The Bugle and be done with it. It's that consistently funny, smart and biting. That's the kind of comedy we need more of online and real life. Better late than never, here's my thoughts on Bugle #185 for Jesse Fox Splitsider "Week In Comedy" podcast round-up:

Connecting to comedic rage is always a fun way to commune with your fellow man, albeit an obnoxious fellow man. Or men. John Oliver and Andy Zaltman keep offering up a high dose of politically-minded disdain, always at an impressive clip. Episode #185 of The Bugle is a quick-paced jaunt back and forth between quality political satire and good ol’ self-deprecating anecdotes. Oliver and Zaltman go after London’s mad-dash Olympic Games preparations. Zaltman continues to impress with his rapid-fire joke delivery and Oliver relays more artful rage-filled sarcasm. The guys mix in some fun bickering between each other with their usual political barbs. The Bugle still being recently independent from their Murdoch-led newspaper overlord causes Oliver to lament his lack of joy slamming his old corporate podcast boss. He muses over the fruitlessness of going after their new web boss, Soundcloud. The guys even throw in a fun metaphor-laden debate over the various types of political self-interest. Plus, there’s a mundane German parliament Sudoku scandal of underwhelming proportions, among many more stories and riffs. A ton of goodness in well less-than an hour. It’s all dealt with swiftly and soundly by The Bugle duo, the seminal force in political comedy. Long live the rage.

The complete list of picks from the Splitsider crew for the week of March 5th. The gang gave a needed shout-out to Rogan's show and the lot of creative-pushing shows:

And, let's try to accept that Charlie Sheen hasn't completely destroyed our collective ability to use the term "winning." Or maybe he has. Plop of The Week: The Todd Glass Show #30

Long live the messy chaotic comedic underworld of comedy podcasts. Sure a whole heck of a lot of shows pushing themselves as comedy podcasts end up just being radio shows online or the dreaded bunch of dudes sitting around talking. The Todd Glass Show continues to go right at these stiff show formats with its assault on the audio chat show format. Not sure there's a non-sketch show that gets more sillier while keeping its grounding. I chose the latest Paul F. Tompkins (part 1 of 2) episode for this week's Splitsider "Week In Comedy" post. Check it out:

The Todd Glass Show keeps rolling along in the blissful comedic weeds – part radio show send-up and part comedy deconstruction crash course. The adding of podcaster extraordinaire Paul F. Tompkins to the fray brings both an expected dose of silliness, as well as a surprising bit of tension. Both Tompkins and Glass are two of the best at switching gears mid-bit. Absurd tangents to honest-to-god adult conversations. It’s all here. Listening to them prod one another along the way is great fun, too. Glass continues his obsession with throwing to fake breaks and over-examining jingles. There’s also actual stories shared, a few cop-related, and an insane visit with the “juice guy” from Glass’ gym (aka “the extremely foreign guy”) – a roided-out Tompkins’ character for sure. The show is at its meta best with the frenetic jumping in and out of bits. Tompkins ends up taking over the show for a hot minute while Glass combusts. The always-paying-attention sidekick, Daniel Kinno, skillfully pops in from time to time, as both the show’s fake irritant and wise observer. Glass, Tompkins and Kinno layer on a bit of substance towards the end with some earnest dialogue on comedic boundaries and the travails of political correctness. The 90-plus minutes of delirious randomness ends up creating another stellar comedic gem.

The other picks from the Splitsider crew this week:

Who Charted? #62 – Jake Fogelnest
A Bit of Chat with Ken Plume – Gillian Jacobs
The Todd Glass Show #30 – Paul F. Tompkins, Daniel Kinno
The Nerdist #164 – Fred Stoller
WTF with Marc Maron #251 – Matt Graham

Honorable mentions this week include a quality batch, not worth missing: Gelmania VI (Matt Besser, Lake Bell, June Diane Raphael, Paul Scheer, Steve Agee),  The Pod F. Tompkast #15 (Martha Plimpton, Chris Hardwick, Jen Kirkman), Pop My Culture #67 "Live at SF Sketchfest" (Drew Carey), The Long Shot #419 “The ‘What a Bunt’ Episode” (Greg Fitzsimmons) and The Smartest Man In The World "Menageries."

Plop of The Week: The Pod F. Tompkast #14

Sometimes it's time to get serious about silliness. Not sure anyone takes this adage to heart more than Paul F. Tompkins. No matter the comedic arena - podcast, TV or stage - Tompkins always seems to dive head first into the bit. His steadfast commitment to earnest silliness is on full display in his usually monthly podcast variety show, The Pod F. Tompkast. I finally did the proper thing and gave him a bit of internet props (virtually meanlingless!) by picking it for this week's Splitsider "Week In Comedy Podcasts" selection. Here's the lowdown:

The hardest working man in podcasting is back! Paul F. Tompkins’s latest episode of his kinda, sorta monthly variety show, The Pod F. Tompkast, is another SPLENDID one. Following Tompkins’ lead for more “splendid” usage. The show follows a similar haphazard path of previous episodes: the best kind of rambling, sketches, a Jen Kirkman call and a live show clip with Paul Scheer. The rambles – let’s just start calling them that – feature Tompkins discussing a make believe heaven/hell experience, word usage fun, the importance of milkshakes and much more. The Great Undiscovered Project – the best kind of self-indulgence – returns with another segment, layering the ridiculousness even more. This time Iced-T and the gang debate which characters they’ll play in the project. Characters talking about characters. I told you it was ridiculous. This turns into Tompkins giving himself comedy therapy, examining what all that Great Undiscovered Project business really means. There’s also Tompkins poking fun at Kirkman’s home security neurosis and a fun live show clip with a “sick” Paul Scheer having Tompkins entertain him. Tompkins achieves the “splendid” comedy feat of combining the personal and absurd. Bonus: he also released an extra clip this week, featuring more Jen Kirkman call-in fun.

A truly amazing week of comedy podcasting took place last week, including the seminal WTF Todd Glass episode. I'd be remiss if I didn't also give props to Pop My Culture for its 2nd-parter to their nifty dinner party best of episode. The other picks from the Splitsider crew:

Comedy Bang! Bang! #140 – Nick Offerman, James Adomian
WTF With Marc Maron #245 – Todd Glass
The Pod F. Tompkast #14 – Paul Scheer, Jen Kirman
The Bugle #178
Sklarbro Country #77 – Andy Daly, Jason Nash, James Adomian

A great week of shows means we all offered up a bunch of honorable mentions including: Best Show on WFMU (Todd Barry, Chris Gethard, Gregg Gethard), Doug Loves Movies #519 (Patton Oswalt, David Cross, Wayne Federman), Pop My Culture #64 Part 2 "Pop The Cork: The Worst of 2011,” The Dead Authors Podcast Chapter 5 "Carl Sagan" (Matt Gourley) The Long Shot #416 "Live From The Improv Lab" (Morgan Murphy), Thrilling Adventure Hour "Beyond Belief – A Dave At The Races,” You’ve Made It Weird #14 (Marc Maron) and WTF With Marc Maron #244 (Steven Wright).
