Plop of The Week: You Made It Weird #70

Pete Holmes is getting dangerously close to making it really hard for people to not know him. You know, that perverbial random stranger on the street kind of knowing. And it's going to be fun, a little weird but a lot of fun. Holmes continues to accel at stand-up and all things comedy, including his regular intimate and thoroughly engaging podcast offering, You Made It Weird. Picking an episode with another fellow comedic peer seemed like the right thing to do. Check-out my excerpt from last week's Splitsider "Week In Comedy Podcasts" round-up:

Pete Holmes is on a roll lately with all things comedy: a possible late night TV show in the works, an ascending stand-up career and a soon-to-be podcast institution. You Made It Weird definitely skews into heavy comedy shop talk but it’s usually that good ol’ fashioned soul searching kind. The nitty gritty, the bits and pieces, the stuff that makes anyone give a crap anytime the performer/audience dance is underway. Holmes’ inquisitive nature and honesty really lays the groundwork for his guests to quickly join in on the sharing-is-caring fun. Fellow comedian and off-the-cuff master, Rory Scovel, pushes the limits even in Holmes’ safe place. Scovel starts off messing with Holmes by bringing a guest to the podcast recording, which leads to a fun more challenging back-and-forth for the host. Eventually, Holmes manages to dig into Scovel’s inspired and often free form approach to performing. Beyond his normal riffing hijinks, Scovel’s insightful about his own helter-skelter performing, his recreational activities and his upbringing. It’s a real treat to peak behind Scovel’s devilish antics and see a bit of the passion that sparks his comedy. The episode really soars when the two comedians get into it about how they stay inspired to create and connect.

Plop of The Week: Jordan, Jesse, GO! #229

The main Maximum Fun podcast duo of Jesse Thorn and Jordan Morris brought in a ringer this week. Fellow podcasting champ in his own right, Jimmy Pardo (Never Not Funny) joined the guys for another fun outing of this usually loose and riff heavy Jordan, Jesse, GO! Thorn and Morris always attack their topics and interviews from different angles, always tip-toeing the randomness with both a psuedo-stoner theorizing and gleefuly intellectual curiosity. Passing along my recap for the episode for Splitsider's "Week In Comedy Podcasts" round-up:

Ever the glutton for self-punishment, Jesse Thorn and Jordan Morris put up “nightmares” for the latest Jordan, Jesse, Go! episode. Comedian Jimmy Pardo guests and alternates with his go-along charm and playful fake ire. The guys keep things loose, letting the topics change effortlessly. Thorn gets things off to a fascinating start with his brain Botox plans. They invent an already classic new product on the spot – “the broaster.” They also get into it about frat boy villains. Listeners are treated to another round of Jesse Thorn’s ongoing grammar torment. Jordan Morris is always ready to start some healthy brainstorming and Thorn and Pardo are game to play along. The crew breaks off into a stupid snack conversation. Listening in to three of podcasts’ most effortless conversationalists and funny men is proves why Jordan, Jesse, Go! continues to be a shiny example of the intimacy of the medium.

The Dana Gould Hour makes another episode, which means another apperance on the Splitsider list. Check-out the other picks from the group this week out:

Comedy Bang! Bang! #164 - Tony Clifton, Ben Schwartz
Jim Florentine's Comedy Metal Midgets: Jim Reviews the Movie Rock of Ages
Doug Loves Movies – Jeff Garlin, T.J. Miller, Pete Holmes
Jordan, Jesse, Go! #229 – Jimmy Pardo
Probably Science #26 – Guest Bil Dwyer
The Dana Gould Hour #8 – "Summer Testacular"

Miller).

Plop of The Week: The Long Shot #504

When does "this week" become "last week" but still written from this week? When you're sharing some podcast love a few days late. I'll continue to be in charge of The Long Shot  fan committee and after a few weeks of others in the Splitsider comedy podcast rounder-uppers stealing my Long Shot thunder, I chose the personality overload show as my Splitsider comedy podcast pick. No Eddie Pepitone this week but the three remaining hosts and guest Beth Stelling more than make up for it. Lots of fighting, shooting-of-the-perverbial shit and awkward moments. Just how I like my audio entertainment. My write-up for Jesse Fox Splitsider "Week In Comedy" podcast round-up:

This week out, The Long Shot foursome is missing their angry clean-up hitter, Eddie Pepitone. No need to fret, the M.I.A. co-host ends up making way for a particularly raw and loose edition. The best host in podcasting land, Sean Conroy, along with his eager cohorts, Amber Kenny and Jamie Flam, welcome sarcastic but earnest guest, comedian Beth Stelling into the fold. Stelling’s an easy match for the group, sliding right in with the over-sharing and fun bouts of self-hate. Her aloofness and playful prodding of a particularly feisty Conroy is all charm. Honesty is always one of the greatest feats of The Long Shot crew. Long running inter-group commentary and back-and-forth between the hosts is also special stuff. Both are in full effect thanks to a delightful Conroy/Flam dust-up over “enchantment” of all things. Both Kenny and Flam continue to bring life to proceedings with their dual threat of youthful sincerity and ridiculousness. It’s a treat to hear the gang’s animated talk of lottery winnings and much more. The now long-running series is really beginning to benefit from its longevity and camaraderie, showing off a lived-in charm and a willingness to engage with each other in both familiar and new ways. It’s like hanging out with a great group of friends, albeit a slightly messed-up group. It’s podcasting, we should have it no other way.

Here's the complete list of episode picks from the Splitsider crew, lots of new off-beat shows this week:

Beginnings #46 – Dan St. Germain
Here's The Thing with Alec Baldwin - Kristen Wiig
How Was Your Week? #57 – Chris Parnell, Jon Daly

Throwing Shade #24
WTF with Marc Maron #269 – David Cross
The Dana Gould Hour # 5 "Conspiracies!"  - Eddie Pepitone, Matt Weinhold, Mike Murphy

Plop of The Week: The Little Dum Dum Club #74

My pick for the top comedy episode last week is all about the positivity - not always my strongest bag. Pretty sure it's not online comedy's usual mode either. The Australian outfit, The Little Dum Dum Club, continues to chug along with a grand mix of positivity and self-deprecation. Don't let the accents fool you, these guys are straight up fun. Here's the write-up for this week's Jesse Fox Splitsider "Week In Comedy" podcast round-up:

The Little Dum Dum Club is a stupidly easy listen. Still not sure how the self-effacing hosts, Tommy Dassalo and Karl Chandler, do it. Sure, the good-natured Australians always fret over the specific Australian-ness of their show. But their ability to mock each other, their guests and seamlessly transitions between some hearty comedy talk and good natured regular life discussions is quite a podcasting feat. Veteran Australian comedian, Fiona O’Laughlin joins the dum dum duo this time out, bringing a dose of family talk to the playful meandering. Dassalo and Chandler embrace having “an adult” in their midst and even venture into a few heady but still fun moments discussing O’Laughlin’s past (and very public) drinking problems. There’s quality talk of O’Laughlin’s Last Comic Standing experience, airport crying, forgetting names and the futility of dream talk. Dassalo and Chandler continue to sow much from their fake hosting rivalry and self-hate, never missing a chance to mock themselves. They always seem to put the guest and listeners at ease. It’s startling when compared to the know-it-all bravado of many comedy podcasters or even the soul-searching broken ones. Hooray for dum dum fun.

The AV Club: Podmass January 19-25

Catching up on podcasts seems to be the norm. If you're forced to skip around and not be one of those hardcore completist, The A.V. Club's weekly Podmass highlights and recaps is always a great reference guide for a quick catch-up session. Once again, the comedy shows win the day with the overwhelming majority of the "best" spots. The A.V. Club elders also took time to note The Sideshow Network's Jerky Boys show. We need more terms other than "retro" for going back to the past for creative content. Not passing judgment - just thinking it's the norm now and we should have more shades of labelling looking back.

I can't forget that both The Nerdist and You Made It Weird pulled off the not-really-that-rare "WTF" - double episode acclaim. Also - let's all celebrate The Bugle releasing their first independent show. Here are the comedy episodes making the cut from the latest Podmass offering

The Bugle #179 "Playas Gon Play"
Comedy Bang! Bang! #141 "Ladies Night"  Tig Notaro, Ronna & Beverly
Doug Loves Movies - Pat Wilson, Josh Freese, Brendon Walsh, Graham Elwood

Plop of The Week: The Todd Glass Show

Sometimes you feel lucky to catch a little bit of honest comedy. Comedy podcasts are aplenty and pretty constant these days - it's hard to take it all in sometimes and can even blend together if you're not paying close enough attention. The last few weeks of Todd Glass in the digital realm are truly a special thing. His weekly long-format show is always pushing ahead and waving at the passerbys with something fun to share. You just have to remember to pay attention. The latest Todd Glass Show episode is a two-parter: both a special treat and a prime example of what this riff-happy show is all about. Here's the pick and thoughs for the weekly Splitsider "Week In Comedy Podcasts" post headed up by the esteemed Jesse Fox.

Todd Glass is settling into his podcasting position quite nicely. The unlikely combo of confidence and unease is on full display again. The latest episode of The Todd Glass Show starts out with a lengthy epilogue to his stellar WTF With Marc Maron appearance. Buddy Sarah Silverman joins him for a recap of the days following his public coming out. Glass continues to amaze with his honest and fun take on it all. Silverman is settling into her comedy elder position with a welcoming grace. She’s a new kind of veteran to the scene, bringing heart and warmth to her discussions. Glass doubles down with a regular edition of his show, featuring studio appearances by Anthony Jeselnik and Jonah Ray. The usual Todd Glass Show format is on full display – it’s morning radio deconstruction on the fly. Glass and friends pretty much dole out nonstop riffing to listeners. Every conversational turn is a chance for comedic self-examination and excoriation. The repeated faking of coming in and out of radio breaks is pure joy. There are fake callers, what ifs and role-playing aplenty. Jeselnik plays a great dickish foil to the eager Glass. Jonah Ray shows off his versatility, playfully switching between eager go-along and reluctant guest. The show overflows with comedy gems in both the moment and from larger isn’t-this-silly perspective. The whole show is in the weeds and that’s the fun of it. When it’s hitting its stride, the show’s battle with its own format and sincerity make it a truly heady and fun listen each time out.

The Splitsider crew took on an off-beat group of comedy episodes. improv4humans continues to dig in for the long haul, bringing improv from the stage to the internet. Plus, T.J. Miller makes a few appearances. The other picks from the Splitsider crew:

improv4humans #10 – Andrew Daly, Horatio Sanz, Joe Wengert
Doug Loves Movies – T.J. Miller, Pete Holmes, Ti West
The Todd Glass Show #28 – Sarah Silverman, Anthony Jeselnik, Jonah Ray
The Thrilling Adventure Hour #55 "Captain Laserbeam: Even Bluebirds Get The Blues”
You Made It Weird #16 – T. J. Miller

Honorable Mentions this week out: Get Up On This #26 (Hannah Hart), How Was Your Week #46 (Chris Gethard, Katie Notopoulos), Sklarboro Country #78 (Rob Riggle) and This My Show #30 (Cole Stratton).

Splitsider Goes Rogue With Its Year-end Round-up

Splitsider's Jesse Fox posted a great year-end recap of comedy podcasts this past week. In lieu of a top whatever list, Fox rolls out a random assortment of superlatives for some of his favorite shows both old and new. Shows recieving recognition include:

Who Charted?
How Was Your Week?
Here's The Thing
Superego
Gelmania
You Made It Weird
improv4humans
The Comedy Cellar: Live from the Table

It's great to see Fox recognize the shows pushing the creative limits available to the podcast format. It shows it's not always about the guys sitting shooting the shit. Although, that's fun, too.
