Los Angeles Kickstarts a Podcast Festival

Los Angeles is working its grassroots comedy magic of late. On the heels of the successful LA Riot Comedy Festival kickstarter campaign, Comedy Film Nerds' Graham Elwood and Chris Mancini are heading up their own campaign to fund a Los Angeles podcasting festival.

The Los Angeles Podcast Festival (www.lapodfest.com) is set for October 12-14, 2012, in Santa Monica. They're proposing to have a slew of live recordings throughout the weekend along with a few comedy shows. The festival doesn't specify whether it's all comedy or not but the early listed participating shows are mostly comedy. No surprises there. I'm excited to see how the event develops if it secures the necessary startup funds.

The announced participating shows so far:

WTF With Marc Maron
Never Not Funny
The Todd Glass Show
Comedy Film Nerds
Walking The Room
The Dork Forest
The 40-Year-Old Boy
The Minivan Men
For Crying Out Loud

Plop of The Week: Superego #3:11

Let's get to it! I finally snuck in there with the Splitsider podcast crew and snagged a chance to shower some love (not as dirty as it sounds) on the Superego crew for their latest episode. Their show continues to push the envelope in the digital audio realm, dig in deeper on its own brand of comedy and seemlessly continue to work guests into their improvised sketch fold. Basically, it's damn funny offbeat shit. Here's my feedback on the episode for the weekly Splitsider "Week In Comedy Podcasts" post, headed up by the Jesse Fox.

Superego, the improvised sketch show with the most fun audio production around, returned with another collection of awesomely fun mind-fucking case episodes. Show creators, Jeremy Carter and Matt Gourley, along with Mark McConville and Jeff Crocker, are hitting their comedic stride with Superego’s brand of nonsensical riffing and clever premises. This episode features the simple oddity of Mudge Coughlin relaxation screaming bits, a movie star press conference sketch firing away silly questioners and with even sillier questions and the Buffrum’s Fragrance Counter sketch that could quite possibly gleefully go on forever. Highlights this time out are the “wonderful trip down mental health lane” from the silly and supremely weird “Hashimoto Wellness Labs Test” and the nerd-tastic “Brown X-Wing Squardron” Star Wars riffing. Special guests include: Paul F. Tompkins, Patton Oswalt, Colin Hanks, Chris Tallman, Mike Rock and James Bladon. Watch out for Bladon’s spot-on and fun Obi-wan Kenobi: it’s a gem. Superego continue to refine their audio and comedy skills and push the envelope of the medium with awesomely fun odd-ball creations that could only truly exist in the podcast realm. Yet again, it’s a weird and fun trip.

The other picks from the Splitsider crew this week:

The Todd Glass Show #29 – Rory Scovel, Mike Koman
Earwolf Presents: Analyze Phish #4
Superego #3:11 – Paul F. Tompkins, Patton Oswalt, Colin Hanks, Chris Tallman, Mike Rock, James Bladon
Here’s The Thing - Lorne Michaels
Doug Loves Movies - Paul F. Tompkins, Garry Marshall, Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber

Honorable Mentions this week out: Sklarbro Country #79 (Tom Scharpling, Chris Cox), StarTalk Radio Season 3, Episode 1: Live At The Bell House (Eugene Mirman, Kristen Schaal, John Dogman, Mike Massimino), The Dork Forest #98 (Michael McDonald & Mike Phirman), The Morning After…Podcast #63 (Courtney Page, Eric Andre), Who Charted? #61 (Jason Mantzouks) and You Made It Weird #19 (Chris D’Elia).

Paul Scheer Likes Podcasts & Sharing

One of the more talented and nicest guys in comedy, Paul Scheer, is giving his fans even more thanks to his recent blog feature, "Podcasts I Like." Announced last week, Scheer will share a podcast he likes via his blog. The first one up was The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith. Scheer knows what's he's talking about. I'm looking forward to seeing what other shows he's into.

You can also catch Scheer and friends via their fun movie show on Earwolf - How Did This Get Made?

SF Sketchfest Receives Digital Props

Wet Hot American Summer Radio Play *Photo by Jakob MosurLate last week, David Downs of the Bay Citizen released a fairly in-depth piece on the SF Sketchfest's heavy reliance on digital comedy for its shows and performers at this year's fest. Sure, "digital" is a pretty large term and maybe even leads to an easy claim these days. The SF Sketchfest should still be commended for its seemless incorporation of podcasters and other digital comedy performers in its fest lineup. The festival's digital friendly stance makes perfect sense since Cole Stratton, festival co-founder, is a member of the digital comedy community through his Pop My Culture podcast.

The AV Club: Podmass January 19-25

Catching up on podcasts seems to be the norm. If you're forced to skip around and not be one of those hardcore completist, The A.V. Club's weekly Podmass highlights and recaps is always a great reference guide for a quick catch-up session. Once again, the comedy shows win the day with the overwhelming majority of the "best" spots. The A.V. Club elders also took time to note The Sideshow Network's Jerky Boys show. We need more terms other than "retro" for going back to the past for creative content. Not passing judgment - just thinking it's the norm now and we should have more shades of labelling looking back.

I can't forget that both The Nerdist and You Made It Weird pulled off the not-really-that-rare "WTF" - double episode acclaim. Also - let's all celebrate The Bugle releasing their first independent show. Here are the comedy episodes making the cut from the latest Podmass offering

The Bugle #179 "Playas Gon Play"
Comedy Bang! Bang! #141 "Ladies Night"  Tig Notaro, Ronna & Beverly
Doug Loves Movies - Pat Wilson, Josh Freese, Brendon Walsh, Graham Elwood
How Was Your Week? #46 “Consequences” - Chris Gethard, Katie Notopoulos
Judge John Hodgman #49 "The Master’s Disaster"
Mike and Tom Eat Snacks #47 "Pirate’s Booty"
Monday Morning Podcast
The Nerdist #160 - Graham Elwood
The Nerdist #161 - Stephen Merchant
Stop Podcasting Yourself #201 - Jon Dore
The Thrilling Adventure Hour #55 "Captain Laserbeam!: Even Bluebirds Get The Blues"
Walking The Room #87 - Rob Delaney
WTF With Marc Maron #247 - Ralphie May
You Made It Weird #15 - Nick Thune
You Made It Weird #16 - T.J Miller

Plop of The Week: The Todd Glass Show

Sometimes you feel lucky to catch a little bit of honest comedy. Comedy podcasts are aplenty and pretty constant these days - it's hard to take it all in sometimes and can even blend together if you're not paying close enough attention. The last few weeks of Todd Glass in the digital realm are truly a special thing. His weekly long-format show is always pushing ahead and waving at the passerbys with something fun to share. You just have to remember to pay attention. The latest Todd Glass Show episode is a two-parter: both a special treat and a prime example of what this riff-happy show is all about. Here's the pick and thoughs for the weekly Splitsider "Week In Comedy Podcasts" post headed up by the esteemed Jesse Fox.

Todd Glass is settling into his podcasting position quite nicely. The unlikely combo of confidence and unease is on full display again. The latest episode of The Todd Glass Show starts out with a lengthy epilogue to his stellar WTF With Marc Maron appearance. Buddy Sarah Silverman joins him for a recap of the days following his public coming out. Glass continues to amaze with his honest and fun take on it all. Silverman is settling into her comedy elder position with a welcoming grace. She’s a new kind of veteran to the scene, bringing heart and warmth to her discussions. Glass doubles down with a regular edition of his show, featuring studio appearances by Anthony Jeselnik and Jonah Ray. The usual Todd Glass Show format is on full display – it’s morning radio deconstruction on the fly. Glass and friends pretty much dole out nonstop riffing to listeners. Every conversational turn is a chance for comedic self-examination and excoriation. The repeated faking of coming in and out of radio breaks is pure joy. There are fake callers, what ifs and role-playing aplenty. Jeselnik plays a great dickish foil to the eager Glass. Jonah Ray shows off his versatility, playfully switching between eager go-along and reluctant guest. The show overflows with comedy gems in both the moment and from larger isn’t-this-silly perspective. The whole show is in the weeds and that’s the fun of it. When it’s hitting its stride, the show’s battle with its own format and sincerity make it a truly heady and fun listen each time out.

The Splitsider crew took on an off-beat group of comedy episodes. improv4humans continues to dig in for the long haul, bringing improv from the stage to the internet. Plus, T.J. Miller makes a few appearances. The other picks from the Splitsider crew:

improv4humans #10 – Andrew Daly, Horatio Sanz, Joe Wengert
Doug Loves Movies – T.J. Miller, Pete Holmes, Ti West
The Todd Glass Show #28 – Sarah Silverman, Anthony Jeselnik, Jonah Ray
The Thrilling Adventure Hour #55 "Captain Laserbeam: Even Bluebirds Get The Blues”
You Made It Weird #16 – T. J. Miller

Honorable Mentions this week out: Get Up On This #26 (Hannah Hart), How Was Your Week #46 (Chris Gethard, Katie Notopoulos), Sklarboro Country #78 (Rob Riggle) and This My Show #30 (Cole Stratton).

Plop of The Week: The Pod F. Tompkast #14

Sometimes it's time to get serious about silliness. Not sure anyone takes this adage to heart more than Paul F. Tompkins. No matter the comedic arena - podcast, TV or stage - Tompkins always seems to dive head first into the bit. His steadfast commitment to earnest silliness is on full display in his usually monthly podcast variety show, The Pod F. Tompkast. I finally did the proper thing and gave him a bit of internet props (virtually meanlingless!) by picking it for this week's Splitsider "Week In Comedy Podcasts" selection. Here's the lowdown:

The hardest working man in podcasting is back! Paul F. Tompkins’s latest episode of his kinda, sorta monthly variety show, The Pod F. Tompkast, is another SPLENDID one. Following Tompkins’ lead for more “splendid” usage. The show follows a similar haphazard path of previous episodes: the best kind of rambling, sketches, a Jen Kirkman call and a live show clip with Paul Scheer. The rambles – let’s just start calling them that – feature Tompkins discussing a make believe heaven/hell experience, word usage fun, the importance of milkshakes and much more. The Great Undiscovered Project – the best kind of self-indulgence – returns with another segment, layering the ridiculousness even more. This time Iced-T and the gang debate which characters they’ll play in the project. Characters talking about characters. I told you it was ridiculous. This turns into Tompkins giving himself comedy therapy, examining what all that Great Undiscovered Project business really means. There’s also Tompkins poking fun at Kirkman’s home security neurosis and a fun live show clip with a “sick” Paul Scheer having Tompkins entertain him. Tompkins achieves the “splendid” comedy feat of combining the personal and absurd. Bonus: he also released an extra clip this week, featuring more Jen Kirkman call-in fun.

A truly amazing week of comedy podcasting took place last week, including the seminal WTF Todd Glass episode. I'd be remiss if I didn't also give props to Pop My Culture for its 2nd-parter to their nifty dinner party best of episode. The other picks from the Splitsider crew:

Comedy Bang! Bang! #140 – Nick Offerman, James Adomian
WTF With Marc Maron #245 – Todd Glass
The Pod F. Tompkast #14 – Paul Scheer, Jen Kirman
The Bugle #178
Sklarbro Country #77 – Andy Daly, Jason Nash, James Adomian

A great week of shows means we all offered up a bunch of honorable mentions including: Best Show on WFMU (Todd Barry, Chris Gethard, Gregg Gethard), Doug Loves Movies #519 (Patton Oswalt, David Cross, Wayne Federman), Pop My Culture #64 Part 2 "Pop The Cork: The Worst of 2011,” The Dead Authors Podcast Chapter 5 "Carl Sagan" (Matt Gourley) The Long Shot #416 "Live From The Improv Lab" (Morgan Murphy), Thrilling Adventure Hour "Beyond Belief – A Dave At The Races,” You’ve Made It Weird #14 (Marc Maron) and WTF With Marc Maron #244 (Steven Wright).
